The Point News is St. Mary's College of Maryland's student run newspaper, designed and maintained by Dave Chase
When I arrived at St. Mary’s College of Maryland one of the first things I did was check out the newspaper. The print version looked great, in fact the paper had just one a couple of awards for excellence in college reporting. However, when I looked for the paper’s website, it was nowhere to be found.
I volunteered my time and skills to creating the paper a site. Working within the parameters of the St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s sites posed some challenges. First, the site’s content management system did not lend itself to creating a dynamic site, such as a new site should be. The college also had strict branding and design guidelines that greatly restricted the creativity of the design.
Challenges aside, by implmenmented several fairly sofistacted tools within the college’s content mangagment system, which is called Cascade Server, I created a site that puts content first and allows the staff at the newspaper to easily update the site.
